Moving into a new home comes with a quick learning curve, and trash day arrives before you know it. If you are settling into Bay Village, a few local rules will keep your first weeks tidy and stress free. In this guide, you will learn your pickup day, what goes where, how to handle bulk and yard waste, and where to take special items. Let’s dive in.
Bay Village contracts curbside refuse and recycling with Republic Services, and each home has Republic’s wheeled carts. These carts stay with the property because they are Republic’s equipment. The most up-to-date service details are outlined in the city’s Republic Services guide. You can review those details on the city’s Republic Services Guide page.
Bay Village’s regular pickup is on Tuesday. If New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas falls on or before Tuesday, collection shifts to Wednesday for that week. You can confirm current timing on the city’s Collection Day and Time page.
Place carts at the curb after 5:00 PM the night before pickup, and have them out by 6:00 AM on Tuesday. Remove empty carts within 12 hours after collection. Position carts within 3 feet of the curb, leave 3 feet between carts, and face the arrows toward the street. Do not set carts in the street or next to mailboxes. See the city’s Collection Day and Time page for these placement rules.
Carts are provided by Republic and remain their property. If a cart is damaged, or if you experience a missed pickup, report it to Republic using the contact information posted on the city’s Trash and Recycling page. The city notes a gradual cart color transition, with replacements occurring as carts are removed from service. You can read more on the city’s Republic Services Cart Transition page.
Keep to the core recyclables. Acceptable items include empty and rinsed metal cans, paper and flattened cardboard, cartons, glass, aluminum, and certain plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs. Place items loose in the cart, clean and dry. The city’s Republic Services Guide outlines these rules.
Common contamination that must not go in the recycling cart includes plastic bags or film, food waste, diapers, paper towels, clothing or textiles, ropes or hoses, styrofoam, and shredded paper. Bagged recyclables are not accepted. When in doubt, place the item in the trash or use a drop-off option listed by the city.
Everyday household trash belongs in the refuse cart. If you have overflow, follow the guidelines on the city’s Bulk Pickup and Dropoff page. Large quantities of construction debris are not part of curbside service and are the responsibility of your contractor.
Yard waste is collected year-round. Use paper lawn bags or dedicated yard-waste cans and place them at the curb like your carts. During the city’s seasonal leaf pickup, follow posted instructions. After the season ends, place leaves in paper yard bags or with regular refuse. Bundle brush in 3 to 4 foot lengths, and keep bundles and root balls under 60 pounds. The city’s Leaves, Yard Waste, and Snow page lists the full requirements.
Weekly bulk and yard-waste pickup occurs on your regular service day with a limit of up to eight items. Examples include furniture, carpeting cut and rolled to 4-foot lengths, 32-gallon cans or bags, mattresses, box springs, and certain appliances. Upholstered furniture and mattresses must be wrapped in plastic for pickup. See the city’s Republic Services Guide for examples and limits.
Appliances that contain Freon, like refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers, require a scheduled pickup through the Service Department. These pickups occur separately. Schedule through the contact options listed on the city’s Bulk Pickup and Dropoff page.
The City Service Garage at 31300 Naigle Road hosts several resident drop-off events. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is accepted on scheduled dates, typically monthly. Items such as oil-based paints, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, and aerosols are commonly accepted. Some materials are not accepted, so confirm details before you go using the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District’s HHW guidance.
Electronics and computer equipment are collected at periodic drop-off days at the Service Garage. The city also schedules seasonal collections for tires, scrap metal, holiday lights, and paper shredding events. Always confirm dates and hours on the city’s Household Hazardous Waste and Computer Drop-off page.
For textiles and small household items that are still usable, Bay Village supports pickups through Simple Recycling. Schedule and place labeled bags or boxes at the curb as instructed on the city’s Trash and Recycling page.
If you want to divert food scraps, Bay Village offers community composting sites with Rust Belt Riders at Bay Lodge and Reese Park. These are subscription drop-off locations with locked bins. Learn how to join and what is accepted on the city’s Community Composting page.
Republic Services is your first call for missed collections and cart issues. The city’s Trash and Recycling page lists Republic’s local number and the Service Department contacts. For city-run drop-offs, event questions, or Freon appliance scheduling, use the Service Department contacts posted on the same page.
